Last week was Sunrise Week, our week of celebrating diversity of the people and families that make up Team Broughton! Originally thought up by OPEG last year as a day of equalities learning and sharing, we decided to extend it to a week to allow more opportunities for people to attend and share examples of their culture with classes. What a busy week! See below some examples of the visitors we welcomed last week.
Risay and Ayden’s Mum Azwa visited P6/7 to teach the class all about Malaysian Night Markets!
Azwa also visited Ayden’s P3 class, to teach them about how Eid is celebrated.
Cassie’s Dad Chunliang visited the P5 classes to teach them about the origins and customs of the Chinese Dragon Boat festival!
Arya’s Mum Ana, with her friend Leticia, gave P3a a Tour of Spain, teaching about food, customs, sports and animals and teaching some Spanish words and phrases!
Indah and Ria’s Mum Pauline visited P3a and P6 to teach them about Malaysian schools and snacks!
Holly’s Gran visited the P2 classes to share a story from South Africa, and teach them some language too!
Khubaib and Zohair’s Mum Bilkies visited the P2 classes to teach them about Kashmir, the area of India she comes from!
P1b decorated biscuits with flags of different countries, and designed some of their own!
Ruby’s Mum Kirsten also visited P1 to teach some Maori words and a song from New Zealand!
Conrad and his team came to our assembly on Friday and presented their Chinese Lion dance performance for us! It was amazing!
Finally, the week was rounded off with an International Cafe run by our Parent Council FAB team. OPEG pupils helped with setting up and selling at the cafe. There were lots of tasty treats from different countries and cultures to buy, and a recipe share so people could copy or photograph the recipes of others!
We’d like to thank everyone who gave up their time to come and take part in Sunrise Week! Thanks to all our visitors for sharing their stories, information or performance with the classes, and also to all the volunteers who helped organise the International Cafe. Thanks also if you attended the cafe and bought something! Let’s see if we can get even more visitors at Sunrise Week next year!
