Parent Council/FAB Quiz Night

Please see below a message from our Parent Council/FAB.

FAB Quiz night

We had a FAB quiz night with Mr Borthwick being our quiz master last Friday.  We had a full house, with 70+ of you joining!  Thank you.  We hope you all had a chance to chat and had loads of fun.

Our continued fund-raising effort helps make some of these social events low cost and a reality.  This was the first Parent Council event of 2024, with many more to come until the summer.  Like usual, we had volunteers from the school senior leadership team, parents and carers, to help set up, serve and tidy up on the night.  It was a really good team work!

We hope you continue to support our Parent Council future events, see you soon!

Playground Space Tidy Up!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to this amazing group of parent and pupil helpers!

They have been very busy clearing away trees that were overgrown and clogging up the space to the side of our Nursery and Gym hall building! They managed to clear half the trees away from the side of the gym hall, and they completely cleared the land beside the nursery to make way for buggy and scooter park space. They filled a skip!

We’re very grateful for all their hard work! House points all round we think!

Broughton Cyber Captains- Assemble!

Our Pupil Digital Group, or Cyber Captains, as they have named themselves, have started what will become a regular job this session. Each week they will visit a stage in the school to collect some photos or videos of some successful learning to be shared on our school website and X feed.

Last week Cyber Captains William T (P7) and Ellis Clark (P5b) visited P7 to see what they’ve been up to.

Here’s what P7 had to say-

This week we did some self portraits and finished our Year Target booklets. We also went buddying with P1. We helped them to complete a questionnaire about the rights of the child. We also designed hoodies showing our identity, hobbies and talents.

Sunrise Week- April

Last year we organised an event called ‘Sunrise Day.’ This day is named after the motto of our Pupil Equalities Group (OPEG), ‘When the sun rises, it rises for everyone.’

This event was an invitation to parents/carers to come in and visit classes to share their culture with the pupils, through information presentations, donating food to taste, stories, sharing artefacts or other symbols. We also invited pupils and staff to come to school in national/cultural dress that day and had equalities themed learning happening in classes that day.

Sunrise Day was such a success, this year we have decided to extend it and have Sunrise Week! This will be the week beginning Monday 22nd April 2024. We hope this might give people more opportunities to come in rather than just one day.

Sunrise Week will be rounded off on Friday 26th April with a FAB International Café, where donations of national cuisine and dishes will be gratefully received.

Last year the theme was very much about sharing the diverse culture of our school with the pupils, and we are keen to continue that this year. We also want to recognise other areas of equalities during Sunrise Week too. Themes of gender equality, disability, LGBTQI+ and age equality are also issues we have introduced in school, and we’d be keen to have these issues represented during Sunrise Week too!

Please let us know if you would be interested in sharing your experience with a class or classes. Your visit would only need to be around 10-15 minutes per class. This visit could be-

-telling a story from your culture/country

-teaching a song from your culture/country

-teaching some words and phrases in a language

-doing a ‘Show and Tell’ with an object or artefact of interest from your country or culture.

-Henna or hand painting

-Presenting information or experiences around gender equality, LGBTQI+ rights, disability rights or age equality.

We’d also be grateful if you could share any contacts you may have with groups or organisations who you feel could participate in Sunrise Week.

If you would like to come in to visit a class or classes, or have any contacts you think could get involved, please email Mr Borthwick , david.borthwick@broughton-pri.edin.sch.uk with your name, child’s class(es) and what you would like to share on the day.

Please let us know by Friday 5th April 2024 to allow us to arrange this successfully.

Thank you!
