Summer Fair

summer Fair

Last weekend we held our annual PSA Summer Fair in our playground.

The playground was full of stalls and activities with a range of different themes, manned by pupils, parents, staff and some visitors especially for the day.

The weather was mostly kind to us, and didn’t dampen our spirits! Overall, the event raised an amazing £2126 towards playground developments!

Huge thanks to everyone who volunteered to help on the day, thanks also to those who attended and bought something! A special thanks to our PSA for all their hard work in planning and organising the event!

Health Week and Sporting Success!

Health Week poster

Health Week

Last week was our annual Health Week, and what a successful week it was! All our children experienced a wide range of activities to promote a healthy body and mind. From DrumFun, Judo and KidzFit, to Relax Kids, meditation and Fun Runs, we all had a great time. Our school Kindness tree in the basement is full of positive compliments and examples of kind behaviour towards each other. Long may it continue!

Sports Day

We held our P1-3 and P4-7 Sports Day on Friday, after the pesky rain washed out our first attempt on Tuesday! P7 buddies helped with scoring the infant sports event, and there was lots of fun to be had by everyone, and lots of enthusiasm and effort on show too!

The Infant Sports event was won by P3b! Great effort everyone!

Interscholastics

Last week was also the annual Edinburgh Schools Interscholastic Athletics championships event, held at Meadowbank Stadium.

Mrs Ramm, Ms Lebov and some very kind parent volunteers took our team of P6 and P7 pupils along- everyone gave their all, and showed great enthusiasm in a range of different athletics events- no major medals to shout about, but as you’ll see from our photos, we kept smiling! Well done to all!

Gaelic Football

Gaelic football

Gaelic Football has been part of our Sports programme at Broughton for a number of years now, and we have a number of current and ex-pupils who play at a very high level.

3 of our P7 pupils, Katie Telford, Ruth Adler and Rania Ely have been selected for the under 14 year old Scotland squad and have been training over the last few weeks in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Coatbridge. This is in preparation for going to Ireland for The Feile (Europes biggest youth sporting competition) on 23-25 June.
Last weekend Katie and Rania were in Birmingham for the Girls British Feile, a very successful event.
Our Scotland team narrowly lost in the final, which had gone to extra time! All the girls performed brilliantly and although disappointed, gave their all.

Mhairi Harper, an ex-pupil, was our Scotland Captain for the girls and Sam Edgcombe, another ex-pupil, the boys Captain. Broughton Primary ex-pupils have been 3 out of 4 Scotland Captains in the last 2 seasons, and over the last two seasons Broughton have had 10 players in the Scotland squad for the boys and girls.

This is fantastic news, and credit must go to these pupils, current and former, for their skills and efforts! Credit also to Niall Considine, our school Gaelic Football coach, for sparking the interest and enthusiasm in these pupils to devote so much of their time to achieving these results!

Well done all!

Edinburgh Marathon Festival

Edinburgh Marathon

Last weekend was the annual Edinburgh Marathon Festival, held at Holyrood Park.

Broughton Primary was represented by around 100 parents and pupils, as well as Mr Horan from P5b running a 10k race! Everyone put in an amazing effort, and a great day was had by all! Our school got lots of mentions on Forth One as our runners finished, and everyone’s medals were well earned! Huge congratulations!

We are all so proud of Team BPS Runners! Your efforts have inspired Mrs Rushforth, who has hinted that she’ll run next year if we get 115 entries! Now, there’s a challenge!

Here are some photos of the day!

Games at the Hub

A team of P6 pupils attended Games at the Hub, a sports event held at Forrester High School.

We sent 3 teams- swimming, rugby and volleyball- and what a successful day we had!

Our swimming and rugby teams both won their tournaments, and our volleyball team were only 1 point from winning theirs!

We’ll need to invest in a trophy cabinet at Broughton, as we came back to school with 2 great shiny trophies! A huge well done to all the pupils, for great effort and behaviour on the day! Some photos of the event can be seen below. We are so proud!

Health Week 2017

Next week is our annual Health Week at Broughton. A range of different health and wellbeing activites have been planned by our staff Health and Wellbeing group, and we are all looking forward to it very much!

Letters have been distributed to promote the week already, so we look forward to kicking off our week with a special Whole School assembly on Monday. Remember, we’re encouraging all pupils (and staff too) to wear sports clothing all week so we can all be ready to go for any one of the fun sporting activities that may be planned that day! Just remember, no football tops please! Remember also that our Sports Day is on Tuesday, weather permitting, at Botanical Broughton.

Miss Clark has made this cool poster to promote Health Week 2017!

Online Safety Workshops

ONLINE-SAFETY-TITLE-2

As the summer holidays approach, the likelihood is that our children will be spending more time online during their time off.  The NSPCC/O2 are now offering parent/carer workshops on the subject of online safety.

They are keen to offer this as a cluster rather to individual schools. Drummond High School have very kindly given the use of their Community Lounge for this and are looking forward to hosting.

This event will take place, at Drummond, on Friday 9th June from 9.30-10.30am. All are welcome. A letter with further details is attached below.

O2 and NSPCC workshop – Friday 9th June

To allow us to confirm numbers attending, please can you RSVP to  Keith.Martin@abbeyhill.edin.sch.uk by Friday 26th May.

This sounds like a very useful and worthwhile event!

Edinburgh Marathon Festival- 3 weeks to go…

Edinburgh Marathon

With just over three weeks to go until the Edinburgh Marathon Festival (EMF), we wanted to update you on how things are going. Also see the attached EMF Newsletter below-

EMF Newsletter- May 2017

THE RUNNERS
There are an amazing 94 pupils signed up to run and every year group from Nursery through to P7 is represented. With four Junior Races this year, as well as our fantastic parents and teachers running in the 5 adult races, Broughton Primary School has over 100 runners taking part. How brilliant is Team BPS?!
We’ll certainly be well represented across the whole race weekend and living up to our ‘Super Active Schools’ status awarded to us by the EMF organisers following our fantastic success in 2016. As we head into the 2017 event, we’re pretty sure we’ll be the biggest school group taking part.
TRAINING
The children have been training hard and for the past few weeks, we have held Sunday morning fun runs at Pilrig Park. We’ve had 30+ children run together every week (with a few parents too!) and have had lots of fun. Thanks to everyone who has come along to make these such great sessions. Team BPS is definitely race-fit and we can’t wait to pull on our trainers and school t-shirts on race day.
Our story has been picked up by our lovely local free paper the Spurtle too. They’ll post the story closer to Race Day. Keep an eye on http://www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/news to be sure not to miss it. Don’t worry if you do, as we’ll post a link to the story on the Facebook Broughton Parent page and Twitter.
We’ve also been posting video clips and photos from our training sessions on Twitter @bpsrunners. So if you tweet, please follow us!
FUNDRAISING
You don’t have to be a runner to help with the fundraising. We’ve raised £967.00(with gift aid) so far, but we’ve still got some way to go to reach our target of £2500. All money raised will go towards buying new resources for every class to revamp ‘Golden Time’, an important part of the school week. We’ll also continue to support our ‘culture fund’ which all classes receive. So if your child has been on a school trip in the last few months, then it’s likely that the culture fund helped make this possible. It’s been so popular with everyone that we want to continue the fund. Please help by sharing our fundraising page with family, friends, workmates and ask them to share it too!
http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/BPSrunners
We know some of you prefer using sponsorship forms and raising money the good old fashioned way too. Contact us at bpsrunners@gmail.com and we can arrange collection.
GOOD LUCK BPS RUNNERS
We have been lucky enough to receive some good luck messages. We’ll be compiling a short video and hope to share this at assembly the week before race day. There are some surprises in there which we hope will make everyone feel proud and motivated.
RACE DAY
Finally, don’t worry if you’re not running. You can still be part of the EMF weekend by coming along to support your classmates in their races. We’ll all be in Broughton Primary School t-shirts, making us easy to spot and cheer us on.
A special thank you to Mr Horan from P5b. He is representing the teachers and will be running in the 10k race at 9am on Saturday 27th. Please come and support him too.
Date: Saturday 27th May, 2017
Venue: Holyrood Park, Edinburgh
Times: There are FOUR junior races this year.
11.45am Junior 5K (11 years and over)
1.00pm Kids’ Kilometre (3-6 years)
1.45pm Junior 1.5K (6-8 years)
2.30pm Junior 2K (9-12 years)

I hope you all join us in saying a huge thank you to all the runners. They are all giving up their spare time to train and take part in the races and raise funds for our school.

Go Team BPS!

well done
