Lagganlia- Part 2!

Lagganlia-Logo

P7 returned from their very successful residential excursion to Lagganlia on Friday.

We all had a fantastic week, full of a range of different outdoor activities. Among the activities we were lucky to take part in were-

  • Gorge walking
  • Mountain Biking
  • Kayaking
  • Archery
  • Snowboarding
  • Hill Walking
  • Shelter Building
  • Rock Climbing
  • Mapping and Compass Skills
  • Abseiling

We also had the chance to practice important life skills that developed independence- being away from home for 4 nights, making beds, keeping dorm rooms and communal areas tidy and organising ourselves to follow detailed instructions.

Lagganlia staff were very impressed with the efforts of our pupils. They were enthusiastic about their activities, persevered when things were challenging, and supported and encouraged each other to keep going to succeed.

We are very proud of such glowing reports- huge well done P7! We hope you enjoyed yourselves! You’ve made some very special memories.

Below are a selection of the many photos we took last week!

Summer Term

Lagganlia

Lagganlia-LogoP7 arrived safely at Lagganlia Outdoor Education Centre, near Aviemore, yesterday lunchtime!

We have settled in to our dorms well, and have been developing independence and life skills through keeping our new home for the week clean, doing dishes and keeping dorms tidy and organised!

We have already done a range of exciting and interesting activities! Last night we carried out a ‘Scatter Course’, a kind of scavenger hunt to get to know the Lagganlia Centre well. Todays activities have included a gorge walk, abseiling, rock climbing, mountain biking and a hill walk.

The children have been recording their thoughts and feelings about their activities in their daily diary time too.

The weather has been mixed- a bit windy today, but that helps to keep the dreaded midges at bay!

We are happy to share just a few of our pictures so far with you below- there has already been some fantastic team work, encouragement, support and determination from our pupils- long may their positive attitude continue! More photos to follow later in the week!

A Busy Week @ Broughton!

We had a visit from author E.R. Reilly at our assembly on Monday! He read us some excerpts from his books and gave us story writing tips we can use in our own creative writing and stories.

He held a book signing, where pupils could buy signed copies of some of his stories. Over 50 copies of his books were sold, so he kindly donated a number of free books to the school!

We enjoyed his visit very much!

meet-the-teacher

This week also saw our annual ‘Meet the Teacher’ event. The evening was well attended across the school, and we hope that our parents and carers found it to be a useful and informative event. Power point presentations for each stage will be available to view on individual class pages soon. Watch this space!

Thanks for supporting us with your attendance!

Author Visit to school

Writer

The author E.R. Reilly is visiting our school on Monday at Assembly. He will talk to the P3-7 classes about his work and give them ‘top-tips’ for writing stories of their own. This will launch our new approach to teaching Reading at Broughton which you will hear more about at ‘Meet the Teacher’ on Tuesday.

E.R Reilly’s books are suitable for all children. From ‘Rashnu’, which is especially suited to younger readers, through to ‘Tall Tales’, where a girl ventures into the woods to rescue her pet dog.
You can visit the website at: http://www.er-reilly.co.uk where you can read extracts from the books and see videos of Eamonn teaching children to write stories.

If you would like to purchase one of the books please fill in the slip below and return it to school.

20 mph Zones

20mph zones

We have been asked to share the following information with you-

Edinburgh 20mph Speed Limits – Go Live

From Sunday 31 July, the legal speed limit in streets across much of Edinburgh’s city centre and rural west area went down to 20mph, the first phase in a planned rollout of lower speeds across the Capital.

The new speed limits are designed to increase safety for all road users in Edinburgh as well as creating a calmer, more people-friendly environment in shopping and residential streets. A network of key arterial roads across the city will be retained at 30mph and 40mph, resulting in a modest impact on journey times overall.

Our phased 20mph rollout between now and early 2018 brings to fruition many years of planning and public consultation and the network has been designed in line with robust criteria in partnership with key stakeholders such as Police Scotland and Lothian Buses.

Police Scotland will enforce the new limit, focusing on areas where particularly high levels of contraventions are recorded. Anyone caught breaching the limit risks a £100 fixed penalty and three penalty points on their licence.

We have long recognised that a majority of city residents want to see speed limits reduced in the city centre, around residential areas and in busy shopping streets.

Phase 1 ‘go live’ marks the start of sharing these benefits right across the Capital.

Further information and a detailed map of the 20mph network is available at edinburgh.gov.uk/20mph or visit our Facebook page at Facebook.com/edin20mph
