Also don’t forget Joel and Caroline, the Kenyan runners who visited the school on Friday-they are taking part in the main event tomorrow too!

Let’s cheer everyone on!

Good Luck

EMF- One Sleep To Go!

Edinburgh Marathon

The Edinburgh Marathon Festival begins tomorrow! We have 118 pupils taking part this year, as well as enthusiastic parents and teachers participating too. Our P3-7 entrants were given a very special treat today, when Project Africa Athletics paid us a visit.

Project Africa Athletics

Project Africa Athletics is a non-profit making charity, who discover, help train and support talented athletes currently living in poverty in Africa. Joel and Caroline, two marathon runners from Kenya, came along to talk to the children. They talked about their lives as farmers in Kenya, and how they developed into world class marathon runners. The children had the opportunity to ask them questions, and compare their home and school life to those of Joel and Caroline. Joel even taught us some Kalenjin, his local tribal language!

Joel and Caroline will be running in the Marathon at the weekend, so we’ll be giving them all support and good luck for this! They may even be around to cheer on all our Broughton runners this weekend too!

This was a very special experience for all our plucky runners. Good luck this weekend team Broughton!  #gobroughton

Electives

Today was the first day of our Electives programme. The children were allocated one activity from a wide range of choices, and will work to develop their skills in this activity, every Friday, for the next 4 weeks. The school was alive today with the buzz of activity, and from a wide range of activities to either build on a current interest or skill, or to develop completely new skills in something never tried before. Amongst the activities happening today we had-

  • Singing
  • Yoga
  • Ballet
  • Philosophy
  • Table Tennis
  • Art
  • Swimming
  • Spanish
  • Gaelic Football
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Comic Book creating
  • Animations
  • Coding
  • Card Games

We hope everyone enjoys developing their skills on these activities over the next few weeks. Here are some photos of our first sessions today…

Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2018

Edinburgh Marathon

The annual Edinburgh Marathon Festival is this weekend! We have 118 children from Broughton Primary running on Saturday, which is an amazing number. There are also lots of parents taking part over the weekend, as well as Mrs Rushforth and Mr Horan from school!

Last week our fantastic runners picked up their special Broughton t-shirts they’ll be wearing on the day. That should make them easy to spot if you are going along to spectate and cheer them on!

Today all our runners had some special photographs taken, altogether in our school playground. It took a bit of organising to get everyone to stand correctly and look at the camera at the same time, but we got there!

A big thank you to everyone who took part in The Big Pedal at Broughton on the 4th May 2018! Our JRSOs were very busy collating our results and an impressive 183 pupils, parents and carers cycled or sccoted to school on the 4th May. Well done to everyone from Nursery to P7 who took part and made the day such a success.

Broughton Primary School placed 19th out of 66 schools in the Large Primary Schools One Day Challenge Category. 45.95% of our school population cycled or scooted to school on the day. Very impressive!

Here are a couple of photos of some nursery pupils doing their bit on the day. Remember to keep cycling with all of this lovely weather!

The Big Pedal and Parent Drop-In

Image result for sustrans big pedal 2018

Today was the Big Pedal-the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. Our Junior Road Safety Officers have been encouraging as many pupils and parents as possible to take part. Whether it was by scooter or bike, we certainly had a lot of traffic in our playground this morning!

Today the JRSOs carried out a survey of how many people took up the Big Pedal challenge, and 183 people took part! That’s a great effort!

We’ll find out soon how our number compares with others around Edinburgh and the UK, so keep a look out for an update!

Parent Drop-In

Today we also held another Parent Drop-in. A chance for our parents and carers to pop in and spend some time in class to catch up on some of the fantastic learning happening in school. The school was buzzing with activity, and it was lovely to see so many visitors around the school! We hope you enjoyed your visit!
