Broughton and the BBC- Update!

250px-springwatch_titleYou may remember our previous post in January about our Language Classes, who had a visit and workshop with  Chris Packham and the BBC Springwatch team.

Last June, the LC1 took part in a dig for EDF’S ‘What’s Under Your Feet?’ on The Pod education programme. We were digging to see if we could find any insects and had to send our data in. We were entered into a prize draw and won the competition!
Our prize was a visit and workshop in the LC with EDF, the British Trust for Ornithology and Chris Packham with the BBC!

This visit was filmed for the BBC Springwatch webpage, and we’re able to share the clip now! Look out for some familiar locations in the clip. It’s so lovely to see our LC pupils involved in this fantastic learning experience! Well done everyone!

Interscholastics and Sports Day

Image result for interscholastics edinburgh 2019Last Monday was the annual Edinburgh ‘A’ Schools Interscholastic Athletics event, held at Myreside Stadium.

Broughton sent our team of P6 and P7 athletes, who took part in a range of relay and individual races, as well as cricket ball throwing!

Although we didn’t win any medals, we all participated to our very best abilities, and represented the school well! Here are some photos of the event, thanks to our star photographer, Ivon Bartholomew!

Well done to everyone for making it on to the team, and taking part so well!

Yesterday we held our Sports Day over at Botanical Broughton. The sun shone for us, and we all had a great day of sports, with a wide range of different events!

Here are some photos of the day. We held our P4-P7 sports in the morning, and the P1-P3 event in the afternoon.

For our P4-7 sports, each class has one boy winner, and one girl winner. Here is a list of our winners from P4-P7.

P4a- Erin and Antoni

P4b- Mariyah and Oliver

P5a- Jana and Jakub

P5b- Holly and Cameron

P6a- Holly and Logan

P6b- Isla and Seth

P7a- Roisin and Jed

P7b- Jess and Jay

Our infant sports is run slightly differently, where a class is awarded a trophy for scoring the most points overall. Our winning class was P2B! Well done!

For both events, all the points scored were added to each of the 4 houses to come up with a grand total for Sports. Here are the totals-

1st McDonald 1329 points

2nd Pilrig 1233 points

3rd Trinity 1209 points

4th Drummond 1206 points

Well done McDonald! All the house points will be added to the running totals we have been gathering for each house all year, and our overall house shield will be awarded in the last week of term!

Well done to everyone for making yesterday such a big success! Special thanks to Mrs Ramm, and Mrs  Rushforth whose planning and organisation made yesterday run smoothly!

Snapshot Jotters Feedback

Image result for snapshotThis survey is to find out your thoughts about our Snapshot Jotters.
Snapshot Week is held once a year, where all written work is recorded in a special Snapshot Jotter. This jotter is sent home for parents and carers to see and give feedback, using 2 Stars and a Wish. The same jotter is used each year to build up a picture of each child’s learning journey from P2-P7.

Please follow the link below to take our quick survey. Thank you!

PSA Summer Fair 2019

Our annual PSA Summer Fair was held at the weekend in our school playground, gym hall and dining room. Thankfully the weather was kind to us and it stayed dry!

There were lots of different stalls for people to visit, and plenty tasty food and drinks to be had. The final total is yet to be confirmed, but early calculations have an estimate of around £800-£900! What a fantastic total towards helping support the school!

Huge thanks must go to all our PSA organisers of the event. It’s a huge job, and we are all so grateful for your planning, time and effort.

Thanks also to all the parent, staff and pupil volunteers who gave their time to help out on the day- we really couldn’t do it without you!

Finally, thanks to anyone who came along and bought something on the day. Whether it was a sausage roll, some raffle tickets or some popcorn, it all went towards supporting our school. We are very grateful.

We had some visitors with stalls at the event- here’s some feedback from them-

Feedback from East Lothian Bouncy Castles- “The students were fantastic handling the money and all buying the popcorn or candyfloss were extremely well behaved”
Feedback from the Jewellery community stall holder- “Thank you for having me along to your fair today. I had a great time chatting to the children who are all well mannered.”

Here are some photos of the event. Well done everyone!

Huge thanks to everyone who took part, with special thanks to Catriona and Sandra for their organisation of our involvement in the event. Congratulations to both too, as they deservedly won a National Scottish Parent award for all their efforts in organising Broughton’s participation in the EMF over the years. They attended a ceremony in Glasgow to accept their award. Well done ladies!

Games at the Hub

Games at the HubPrimary 6 again took part in the annual Games @HUB festival. This is a Primary 6 focused sports event that takes place at Forrester High School. This year the children participated in Rugby, Swimming and Dance. We had a great experience with the Rugby team finishing third out of eighteen schools, the swimmers being rewarded for showing great sportsmanship towards the other schools and the dancers performing to the hundreds of other children. The children from Broughton did us proud with great enthusiasm, effort and manners all day. Well done to all of those children who took part!

Health Week!

Healthy EatingNext week is Health Week! We have a range of interesting and exciting activities planned over the course of the week, including sports days, healthy eating workshops, a whole school picnic and  more. The Edinburgh Marathon festival this weekend will be a fitting start to the week long focus on health and wellbeing. We have around 113 children taking part!

Attached below is our Health Week passport. Each child will receive one of these. Over the following 2 weekends and Health week itself, can you see how many of the activities on the Health Passport you can complete? Complete the activity and then get your Parent/Carers to initial in the box next to the activity to say you have done it.
If you complete 5 or more of the activities, bring your passport back to school, hand it to your teacher and they will put it into the Health Week Prize draw which will be drawn at Assembly.
You could win an amazing prize of a space hopper (Nursery—P2) or a pogo stick (P3—P7)!

Good luck, and we hope you have lots of fun completing your passport!
