Online Safety Workshops

ONLINE-SAFETY-TITLE-2

As the summer holidays approach, the likelihood is that our children will be spending more time online during their time off.  The NSPCC/O2 are now offering parent/carer workshops on the subject of online safety.

They are keen to offer this as a cluster rather to individual schools. Drummond High School have very kindly given the use of their Community Lounge for this and are looking forward to hosting.

This event will take place, at Drummond, on Friday 9th June from 9.30-10.30am. All are welcome. A letter with further details is attached below.

O2 and NSPCC workshop – Friday 9th June

To allow us to confirm numbers attending, please can you RSVP to  Keith.Martin@abbeyhill.edin.sch.uk by Friday 26th May.

This sounds like a very useful and worthwhile event!

Edinburgh Marathon Festival- 3 weeks to go…

Edinburgh Marathon

With just over three weeks to go until the Edinburgh Marathon Festival (EMF), we wanted to update you on how things are going. Also see the attached EMF Newsletter below-

EMF Newsletter- May 2017

THE RUNNERS
There are an amazing 94 pupils signed up to run and every year group from Nursery through to P7 is represented. With four Junior Races this year, as well as our fantastic parents and teachers running in the 5 adult races, Broughton Primary School has over 100 runners taking part. How brilliant is Team BPS?!
We’ll certainly be well represented across the whole race weekend and living up to our ‘Super Active Schools’ status awarded to us by the EMF organisers following our fantastic success in 2016. As we head into the 2017 event, we’re pretty sure we’ll be the biggest school group taking part.
TRAINING
The children have been training hard and for the past few weeks, we have held Sunday morning fun runs at Pilrig Park. We’ve had 30+ children run together every week (with a few parents too!) and have had lots of fun. Thanks to everyone who has come along to make these such great sessions. Team BPS is definitely race-fit and we can’t wait to pull on our trainers and school t-shirts on race day.
Our story has been picked up by our lovely local free paper the Spurtle too. They’ll post the story closer to Race Day. Keep an eye on http://www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/news to be sure not to miss it. Don’t worry if you do, as we’ll post a link to the story on the Facebook Broughton Parent page and Twitter.
We’ve also been posting video clips and photos from our training sessions on Twitter @bpsrunners. So if you tweet, please follow us!
FUNDRAISING
You don’t have to be a runner to help with the fundraising. We’ve raised £967.00(with gift aid) so far, but we’ve still got some way to go to reach our target of £2500. All money raised will go towards buying new resources for every class to revamp ‘Golden Time’, an important part of the school week. We’ll also continue to support our ‘culture fund’ which all classes receive. So if your child has been on a school trip in the last few months, then it’s likely that the culture fund helped make this possible. It’s been so popular with everyone that we want to continue the fund. Please help by sharing our fundraising page with family, friends, workmates and ask them to share it too!
http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/BPSrunners
We know some of you prefer using sponsorship forms and raising money the good old fashioned way too. Contact us at bpsrunners@gmail.com and we can arrange collection.
GOOD LUCK BPS RUNNERS
We have been lucky enough to receive some good luck messages. We’ll be compiling a short video and hope to share this at assembly the week before race day. There are some surprises in there which we hope will make everyone feel proud and motivated.
RACE DAY
Finally, don’t worry if you’re not running. You can still be part of the EMF weekend by coming along to support your classmates in their races. We’ll all be in Broughton Primary School t-shirts, making us easy to spot and cheer us on.
A special thank you to Mr Horan from P5b. He is representing the teachers and will be running in the 10k race at 9am on Saturday 27th. Please come and support him too.
Date: Saturday 27th May, 2017
Venue: Holyrood Park, Edinburgh
Times: There are FOUR junior races this year.
11.45am Junior 5K (11 years and over)
1.00pm Kids’ Kilometre (3-6 years)
1.45pm Junior 1.5K (6-8 years)
2.30pm Junior 2K (9-12 years)

I hope you all join us in saying a huge thank you to all the runners. They are all giving up their spare time to train and take part in the races and raise funds for our school.

Go Team BPS!

well done

ParentPay

ParentPay

The Council is introducing a new online payment service for schools provided by ParentPay. This will provide an easy system for you to pay for school meals, breakfast clubs and other items such as school trips.
ParentPay will also become the main way for you to choose your child/ren’s school meals, including free school meals, where you can go online and make your choice for the following week.
We believe this system will offer benefits to both parents and the school and would encourage you to sign up to use it.

Attached below is a leaflet with details of how ParentPay works, some of the benefits of ParentPay, and how to get started with ParentPay.

Red Nose Day

Red Nose Day 1

Red Nose Day was on March 24th. Our Pupil Council organised our school’s participation, and lots of people came dressed in red, or as their favourite red nose day character! They also organised a fun competition, and the total amount raised by Broughton to send off to Comic Relief was £282! Well done to all, we’re sure the money will help lots of people in need!

Mrs O’Rourke

You will all have received a letter this week, informing you that Mrs O’Rourke, our Head Teacher, will be temporarily seconded to a post of Quality Improvement Education Officer. This secondment is planned to last 23 months, and it is anticipated that it will commence in early June. Once an acting Head has been appointed, we will inform you of this and confirm the date of handover.

Although we will all miss her, this is an exciting opportunity for Mrs O’Rourke, and one our school will benefit from when she returns!

We all wish her good luck in her new post!

PSA Summer Fair Update

summer Fair

Here is an update on this year’s PSA Summer Fair-

Broughton Primary Summer Fair Update

The Summer Fair will take place in the main playground at Broughton Primary on Saturday 3rd June 2017 from 12pm-2.30pm.

Thank you to everyone who attended the PSA planning meeting on Friday 17th March and those of you who have already volunteered to help on the day. This update is for the benefit of those who were unable to attend the meeting.
Please email broughtonparents@gmail.com if you can help in any way.

How can I help in advance?

Raffle Prizes
Ailsa McMullan and Debbie Telford have kindly volunteered to co-ordinate the raffle. We need as many parents/carers as possible to source 1 or 2 raffle prizes from local businesses. Suggested prizes may be hair/beauty treatments, a meal in a local café or restaurant, children’s sport/art/music classes, entry to soft play centre, toys/books/games, beer/wine/spirits. If you are able approach a local business, please email broughtonparents@gmail.com so we can keep a record and not ask the same business several times.

Lend us your BBQ
We require 4 standard sized gas BBQs to cook sausages at the Fair. 2 parents have already kindly agreed to lend us their BBQ for the day. If you are able to bring along your BBQ for the day that would be much appreciated. If fancy yourself as a BBQ chef on the day, that’s even better.

Wine Lottery Volunteer
We need someone to source 90 empty wine bottles, with screw top, and 10 bottles of wine. All bottles are then wrapped in newspaper and given a number and set up on a grid. Punters will be charged £1 on the day for the chance to wine a bottle of wine. Parents/carers/teachers are invited to donate full and empty wine bottles.

Donate
Closer to the time of the event, you will be invited to donate good quality school uniform, toys/books/games in good condition, sandwiches/savouries/home baking and smaller raffle prizes.

How can I help on the day?

Ice cream courier
The PSA are going to order Luca’s ice cream to sell at the Fair. The ice cream needs to be collected from Luca’s ice cream shop in either Morningside or Musselburgh on the morning of the event, Saturday 3rd June 2017. Please email us if you are able to collect the ice cream.

Event Volunteer – Saturday 3rd June 2017

We already have 30 volunteers to help run the event, but we need about 75 to make sure it runs smoothly.
We need some strong fit people to set up tables between 09.30-10.00. Then, there are 3 shifts:

Event set up 10.00-11.30 – 15 volunteers
1st half 11.30-13.00 – 25 volunteers
2nd half/tidy up 13.00-15.00 – 25 volunteers

We plan to run the following stalls and need volunteers to set up and run each stall:

• Home Baking; Sandwiches/Savouries
• Tea/Coffee; Soup; BBQ; Tuck
• Raffle
• Face Painting; Ceramic Painting
• Hair braiding; Henna Body Art
• Balloon Modelling
• Wine Lottery
• Ice cream

Please email broughtonparents@gmail.com if you would like to help on the day.

Please advise if you have a preference of type of stall and time you can help or if you are flexible.
