Book Week (and a half!)

Book

We held our book week over the last couple of weeks, (with snow days in between!)

As well as experiencing a range of different book-related tasks in class, some of our classroom doors were decorated to reflect our Book theme.

Can you recognise the books and characters from our doors?

School Opening Update- Monday 5th March

Thanks so much to all the volunteers who worked hard to clear paths in our playground today!

Broughton Primary plan to be open tomorrow. If the situation should change in the meantime, parents and carers will be notified in the morning.

We’d like to advise you all to take care on the paths on your route to school. The playground still has areas of thick snow so we also ask that parents and carers talk with their children about not throwing snowballs,  unless supervised by the school staff during the school day.

We plan for breakfast club to be open as normal tomorrow.

Also, due to the snow there will be some disruption to lunch menus. All children will receive a hot meal if ordered, but lunch choices will vary so please prepare your child for this.

Lunches ordered for Wednesday – Friday last week will be cancelled so that parents and carers are not charged.

See below the information from the Catering Dept :

Dear Parent/Carer

Due to the severe weather we have been experiencing, the catering department have been unable to receive any deliveries from suppliers. Normal deliveries are not likely to return until Tuesday 6th of March.

School kitchens will be providing a meal service however due to the issues with suppliers this will vary to the advertised menu on ParentPay. Due to the change in menus, allergen information will vary to the website and we will do our upmost to ensure all usual special diets are catered for.

We are working hard to ensure kitchens are back to advertised menus as soon as possible and your support is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Catering Dept.

The staff look forward to welcoming everyone back!

Take care on your way to school tomorrow, and as always, keep an eye on our website and Twitter feeds for any developments.

Thank You

Your School Needs You!

Your School Needs You

This is a request for adult volunteers to help us out!

We will be forming a task force to clear some paths through our snowy playground, as we hope to be all returning to school on Monday 5th March.

If you would like to help us with this, please come to the school playground between 10.30am and 12.30pm tomorrow, Sunday 4th March.

Please bring a shovel with you, as we do not have a supply of them. Also, it would be advisable to bring gloves and a flask of something hot to drink, to help keep warm!

Many thanks in advance to those of you who will be able to help with this!

Please keep an eye out on our website and Twitter feeds tomorrow, where we will be able to confirm whether or not we will be open on Monday after an essential risk assessment has been carried out.

Thank You

World Book Day

World Book Day

Don’t forget today is World Book Day! Although we can’t celebrate in school, whatever the weather there are still lots of different ways to celebrate all things booky!

There are BRAND NEW Biggest Book Show on Earth shows that you can watch online, to activities and downloads, there’s so much to do!

Follow the link below for ideas-

World Book Day ideas

You could also take a photo of yourself in an ‘extreme’ reading situation- reading in an unusual place, or position you wouldn’t normally read in!

You could still get dressed up as your favourite book character- make sure you take a photo so you can share it when you come back to school!

We hope you are having fun during these #snow days. Here are a few ideas to help you to keep busy:

  • read a book/comic
  • bake a cake with an adult
  • write a story
  • make a model
  • draw a picture
  • create a game
  • make a photo collage
  • interview someone who has been out in the snow

We’d love to see/hear what you’ve done during these snow days, so don’t forget to take a photo or keep what you’ve done so you can share it once school returns!

Stay safe everyone!

Leith Chooses Funding

Leith Chooses
Broughton Primary Parent Council has recently applied for £2590 of funding from Leith Chooses. Leith Chooses is a fund to support community projects in Leith and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Parent Council has applied to fund a gardening and community growing project at school. If awarded the funding, it will be used to purchase gardening equipment, materials and a storage shed. The project will allow Broughton pupils to learn first hand about growing food and where their food comes from. Parents and carers will also be encouraged to volunteer to get involved with the project.

The application has been accepted and has reached the voting stage of the process. This means the organisations that receive the most votes will receive funding for their project.

We need as many people as possible to vote for our project. Please spread the word and encourage friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues to vote too.

Here are the rules-

Am I eligible to vote?
• Anyone 8 years old or over, and you live, work, study or volunteer in Leith, can vote. This includes areas of Broughton, Bonnington, Bellevue, Abbeyhill and Newhaven. Your address/postcode will be checked.
• Visit Leith Chooses for more details and to view the map.
• Broughton Primary is within the area as is most of the school catchment.

How do I Vote?
• Come along on Saturday 3rd March to the Leith Community Centre, 42 New Kirkgate, Leith, EH6 6AD and vote in person between 12pm-3pm.
• There will be FREE food and refreshments, face-painting, glitter tattoos and balloon modelling
• You can meet the applicants, hear / chat informally about all the great projects on offer, and then cast your votes for your favourites.
• If you come along and vote in person, you also get a bonus online vote.

How will voting be done?

• You will vote three times – once each for the three different grant pots; small, medium and large. (The small, medium and large projects will be grouped together in three separate rooms.) Our project is in the medium category.
• You will just cast four votes per room, by ‘posting’ coloured vote cards for your absolutely favourite projects in that room. You can only vote once for any one particular project.
Online Voting
• If you can’t get to the Voting Day social event, you can vote online, from 3rd -10th March.
• You can browse online, but in order to actually vote, you need to log in with a unique voter ‘Access Code’.
• You can get a card with a unique Access Code on it, from the Leith Library, the MacDonald Road Library, or from any of the £eith Chooses team (who will be out and about all week in various locations and also at Voter Support Sessions, see below).
• Week beginning 5th March 2018, voter support sessions will be held as follows:
Mondays: Leith Library, Ferry Road, 12-2 pm and 5-7 pm
Tuesdays; MacDonald Road Library, 12-2 pm and 5-7 pm
Wednesdays; Leith Community Centre, 12-8 pm (Cafe)
Friday and Weekend – out and about around Leith (details later)
• If you can’t get hold of an Access Code that way, you can email in and be issued (but not quite immediately) with an Access Code. The email address will not be live until voting opens on 3rd March.
Email:  leithchooses@edinburgh.gov.uk
Can Leith Chooses help you?
If you are unable to attend the Voting Day in person, or can’t easily vote online for whatever reason, Leith Chooses are very happy to do whatever they can to help you to vote. Please just get in touch as soon as possible, explain your situation and they’ll try and find a solution. You are most welcome to email with any queries you may have: contact@Leith Chooses

Thank you for your support!
