Edinburgh Marathon

Edinburgh Marathon

Monday saw the second Edinburgh outing of the gold open topped bus in as many weeks as it visited Broughton Primary School. Lothian Buses joined in celebrating the success of 64 children who competed in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival junior races at the weekend to raise money for their school.

Inspired by P5 children and their teachers running The Daily Mile, and parents and children who ran in the 2015 Hairy Haggis Relays, the Parent Staff Association funded 19 children’s entrance fees to encourage first time runners, and to raise £2,500 for playground improvements. Children from every year group were represented, and took part in regular training sessions together in the weeks leading up to the event.

To reward their extraordinary achievement and community spirit, Dr Andrew Murray, ultra marathon runner and Scottish Government physical activity champion, gave a special assembly at school, about his running career, as well as encouraging the children to keep on running and praising their team work. Each child also received a new ‘Wider Achievement Award’ from Mrs O’Rourke and 20 house points.
Mrs O’Rourke said, “Saturday was a wonderful day – a real achievement for all the Broughton children and families who took part. It has been a fantastic community event that was made even more special by Dr Murray and the gold bus visiting the school on Monday morning.”
Parent organiser, Sandra Bagnall said: “Yesterday was the perfect end to a wonderful weekend of running and celebration for the Broughton Primary School community. Dr Murray’s inspirational talk at the school assembly reinforced what the children have learned during their training sessions and participation in EMF, that exercise is fun, makes you feel great and helps boosts your self-confidence and self-esteem, not just in physical activity but all aspects of life.”

Catriona Scott, another event organiser said: “ We are very grateful to Lothian Buses for lending us the gold bus complete with a ‘well done’ banner for the Broughton runners. It was a lovely surprise for them all and a great way to honour their dedication and achievements. Some children couldn’t quite believe it especially since a lot of them had seen their Hibs heroes in it the weekend before, something that they’ll never forget.”

To date, the BPS Runners Virgin MoneyGiving page has raised a whopping £3,610 including Gift Aid, and the children are looking forward to new picnic benches and loose parts play equipment after the Summer holidays.

You can support our fundraising by visiting EMF Fundraising Page and making a donation online.

Outdoor Learning

At Broughton our P6 and P7 pupils celebrate their wider achievements through participation in the JASS scheme (Junior Award Scheme for Schools.)

One element of JASS is called ‘Adventure’, and  our P7 trip to Lagganlia School Camp allows them to take part in  a wide range of ‘adventure’ type experiences and activities.

For our P6 pupils, and those P7 pupils who did not go to camp, Mrs Clark organised an ‘Adventure’ outdoor learning experience, in St. Mark’s Park woods.

The children were involved in problem solving through building a waterproof shelter, and enjoyed fire building too!

The children all had a fantastic time, and what a great example of outdoor learning!

Thanks to Mrs Clark for organising this wonderful experience for these pupils!

New Signage!

We were very pleased this week to have some new signage and door artwork installed at school.

Our entrance foyer now has a new welcome sign, and the doors at the entrance to the school have transparent artwork showing our school badge, motto and learning wordle.

We are also very excited to have a new sign for our bowling green space, Botanical Broughton. This sign was designed by the Pupil Council, and looks great!

Pupil Council-Successful Learners

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Our Pupil Council have been gathering evidence of successful learning happening here at Broughton.

Each member of the Pupil Council took photographs of successful learners at work, examples of successful learning, or examples of things that helped them to be more successful in their learning.

They gathered a range of evidence, including learning walls, class displays, examples of home learning, pupils working together, and much more, all from a variety of different contexts.

This week they shared their evidence with each other, and invited Mrs O’Rourke along too. They explained what their evidence was, and why they had included it as an example of successful learning. They were very clear and confident in their presentations!

Mrs O’Rourke collated all their evidence in a graffiti wall, which can be found at the link below-

Well done, and thanks to our Pupil Council for their efforts!

Loose Parts Play has arrived at Broughton!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the PSA fundraising events last year.

The money raised has allowed us to introduce Loose Parts Play into the playground and provide training for staff. As you can see from the photographs the children are enjoying being creative and imaginative playing with the equipment.

We now look forward to the delivery of the container to store more equipment in!

Each class has been organised a play date for using Loose Parts in May, to which parents and carers are invited!

Please visit your child(ren)’s class page(s) in the ‘Class Information’ section of the website to access these invitations.

Enjoy!
