Happy Monday Ltd | LinkedIn

Hello everyone, and a happy Monday to you all!

We hope you’re all ready for another week of home learning! Here is today’s update.

First of all, we are pleased to announce the results of last week’s Scavenger Hunt! Our end of year totals are going to be record- breaking for each house, after adding all these points on. There’s less than 2 weeks left until we announce the results for our House Shield. Who knows, there may be another chance to earn some house points before then too! Here are the Scavenger Hunt results-

1st  Trinity with 11 180 points!

2nd  Drummond with 8560 points

3rd  McDonald with 6740 points

4th  Pilrig with 6700 points

Well done to Trinity! You’re doing really well at these lockdown house events!

Miss Clark has another fab resource to share. These are brain breaks suggested by ‘Mentally Healthy Schools’. They could be useful to help children to take a break if they are spending long periods sitting doing home learning. The ideas were originally created for using in the classroom but can easily be adapted to use at home with your child/children.

Brain Breaks

Sadly, we are able to announce today that our annual trip to Lagganlia Outdoor Centre in September has officially been cancelled due to COVID-19. We are all deeply disappointed that this has had to happen, but understand the reasons why this would not be possible. We hope our P6 pupils are not too disappointed, and we’ll get our thinking caps on to try and see if we can replace it with a similar, socially distanced event at some point next session. We will be sending information out to P6 parents to organise refunds once we receive this from CEC.

Finally, we hope our P7 pupils have fun this Tuesday to Thursday, when they will be having their virtual 3-day ‘visit’ to their new high school. We know it’s not the same as actually being there in person, but hope the alternatives provided by the high schools are good fun and enjoyable for you!

That’s all for today folks, stay safe!

Equalities Statement from CEC

Please see below a statement from the City of Edinburgh Council-

Black Lives Matter
Recent events in the US, in particular the shocking death of George Floyd, and the global response are shining a light again on the harmful and persistent issue of institutionalised racism. We fully recognise that it is no less an issue in the UK and Scotland. We have a list of similar deaths of black citizens, and we have witnessed the disproportionate effect of COVID-19 on people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

We are heartened by the concern and support expressed by pupils, parents and staff from across our learning communities in recent days. We are all rightly asking what more we can and should do to support our Black, Asian and minority ethnic pupils and colleagues.

We re-affirm and strengthen our commitment to confronting and addressing racism and discrimination in all its forms through strong anti-racist leadership, teaching and youth work. Our recent engagement with BAME young people and partner organisations has shown that there is much more that we can do and we will continue to listen and learn. We have started by implementing a revised anti-bullying procedure supported by training for senior leaders and pupil Equalities groups and we are working to ensure that Black history and its role in our city is a core part of a decolonised and inclusive curriculum. We will increase training for all school staff and have set up a working group as part of a national commitment to increasing diversity in the teaching workforce.

We believe that our schools have a vital role to play in tackling racism and creating a city where all are treated with dignity and respect. We want all our children and young people to thrive and lead in a diverse and complex world. We do not underestimate the challenge of this deep-rooted problem. We are fully committed to making a difference, harnessing the compassion, energy and creativity of our children, young people, families and staff to make Edinburgh a city where there is no place for discrimination or injustice.

On behalf of,
The City of Edinburgh Council Equalities Steering Group (Education)

HAPPY FRIDAY! - Gerald Lombardo - Medium

Hello everyone, and a happy Friday to you all!

Well done on completing another week of home learning! There are only 2 weeks left until the summer break!

We start today’s update with some photos. Our Broughton Reads focus is ongoing, with lots of our pupils reading for enjoyment while having lunch, or taking part in ‘Drop everything and read’ time every Thursday at 2.30. Here are some photos you’ve shared with us!

We’re happy to share that P5 and P4 will be having Group calls with their teachers next week. Timeslots will be sent out via email, and more information is available on these class pages.

Mrs Gowans sent out a letter yesterday to ask for some information from parents and carers around children returning to school in August. It is attached below in case you missed it.

Parent and Carer Letter- Returns in August

We have been advised by CEC, that the short film, ‘Resilience’ will be shown at 8pm, on Sunday 14th of June on the below advertised channels.

Resilience

We understand the film refers to Adverse Childhood Experiences and their impact on young people, so may be useful to watch if you can.

Our P7 pupils would normally be looking forward to their 3-day visits to High School from Tuesday to Thursday next week. Obviously these will be very different than originally planned, but high schools are still trying to provide a transition experience for these pupils. All the latest information and links we have been sent by high schools can be found in the ‘Transition’ page of our website. Don’t do any of the tasks till next Tuesday though, eager beavers!

That’s all for today’s post, and for another week folks!

We hope you have a great weekend, and, as always, stay safe!

We are also delighted to share the following post from Rachel Blythe, Vice-Chair of our PSA, who has been leading our Planting and Growing Project this session. Thanks for the update Rachel!

Continuing from the earlier information about planting in May and June 2020, Broughton Primary School’s Growing and Cooking Project would like to share some information with you on planting sunflowers and potatoes. We would love to encourage families to plant something at home in June 2020, if they are able to do so. This is a small bit of a replacement for the planting activities, which we would have had in the school in June. The two documents below describe how to grow sunflowers and potatoes. Again, if you plant something, then we’d love to see some photos of the plants as they grow, so please send us pictures so that we can share them here! Please also enjoy our pictures of us repotting our sunflowers in early June.

On Tuesday 23rd June we will be taking a whole school virtual trip to Edinburgh Zoo.
This will involve watching the live webcams, taking part in activities and sharing some information and photographs on Teams or by email for Twitter and the Website. Huge thanks to Miss Wilson and Mrs Clark, our P1 teachers, for organising this! Look out for some pre-visit tasks in next week’s home learning to prepare for this. How exciting! See the attached letter below:

We close today’s post with some more sharing of home learning. Afnan in P6 has shared this lovely piece of embroidery she has done. Here’s what she had to say about it-

“To make embroidery, you use a piece of fabric and decorate it. You need to use some thread and needle, but if you want you can add beads, pearls etc. What you need to do is to draw something to be a template. Then if you have a proper embroidery kit (any kit will do) you can add any colour you want. It  is like you are decorating. It is really hard and I got poked with the needle quite a few times, but I didn’t give up and this is my first time doing embroidery. It turns out to be great!”

We agree Afnan , it does look great! Thanks for sharing with us!

That’s all for today folks! Don’t forget Drop everything and Read time at 2.30!

Happy Wednesday GIF - Find & Share on GIPHY

Hello everyone, and a happy Wednesday to you all!

Hope you’re all well, and enjoying your Scavenger Hunt. Thanks to everyone who has shared your photos and scores so far. There’s plenty of time for this, as the deadline to send in your scores is not until tomorrow at 3.15pm. We’ll add up all the scores and announce the results on Monday!

We sent out a letter yesterday to share the fact that Mrs Garner, our P3a teacher, will be retiring at the end of term. She has been a member of staff at Broughton for 17 years, and has been a much admired and respected colleague and teacher for many staff and pupils alike! We realise how unusual it must be to be retiring under these very strange circumstances, but we are sure you will all join us in thanking her for all her dedication and hard work over the years, and also in wishing her a very long and happy retirement. The copy of Mrs Gowans’ letter is attached below.

Mrs Garner Retirement June 2020

Another recent letter sent out was for P7 parents and carers, with information around how we would like to mark the end of term for our P7 leavers. Again, our plans are very different to how we would originally have liked to mark the end of P7 for them, but we’re still hopeful we can wish them well for the future in a socially distant way! Please see below for a copy of this letter.

P7 End of Term arrangements- June 2020

We hope you haven’t forgotten about our ‘Broughton Reads’ focus. It’s ongoing until the end of term, and we still want to encourage you to keep reading for enjoyment as much as you can. Don’t forget ‘Drop everything and read’ time tomorrow at 2.30pm, and we are still happy to see your lunchtime reading pictures too!

Lastly today, we have some lovely artwork to share! After creating a lockdown picture as part of her home learning tasks, Sky in P5b sent it to Liberton Hospital. That should help cheer people up, it’s so bright and colourful! Well done Sky, such a kind thought!

We’re happy to share lovely examples of home learning like Sky did, just let us know!

That’s all for today, folks! Don’t forget to send us your Scavenger Hunt scores!

Also today, we’d like to share some information from Mr Horan, and the latest Living Streets Scotland focus.
This week’s activity on our updated #walkingfromhome page is encouraging everyone to Embrace. While we can’t embrace each other physically we can still embrace ideas that bring us together and the special things that make us unique.

You can encourage your school children to walk for 20 minutes every day as part of their daily exercise and see what benefits they experience with our activities.

Please continue to share your thoughts, snaps and videos with us by email or on social media #walkingfromhome.

Finally today, we have received some useful safety information from the CEC Swimming Specialists Team, around open water swimming. Please see the post and links below.

We have been experiencing plenty of warm sunny weather recently with much more likely to come over the summer period. As lockdown measures start being relaxed we have noticed various incidents of children taking advantage of swimming in open water areas. Although this is allowed under the current guidelines there is a concern over safety. To this end we strongly recommend that children do not enter any open water unsupervised.

In normal circumstances we would discuss the importance of water safety during swimming lessons. As this is not possible at the moment, we have some online resources that we thought that you might find useful.

  1. The Royal Life Saving Society has a Drowning Prevention Week on the 12th to 19th of June. The following link contains resources for this week. It has advice and simple rules to follow in different water environments. The most relevant ones are.
    Summer Water Safety
    Water Safety at Home
    The Water Safety Code
Five Points for Open Water Swimming Safely
    Cold Water Shock – the facts1   https://www.rlss.org.uk/Pages/Category/water-safety-information
  2. RNLI – this site has a wide range of child friendly resources.
    https://rnli.org/youth-education/education-resources
Interactive Learning Section has some good activities where children decide what to do in different scenarios.
    https://rnli.org/youth-education/education-resources/online-learning
  3. Canal River Trust. This is a child friendly resource. There are several resources for teachers and pupils on this site.
    https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/explorers/water-safety
The following link is for a downloadable board game

The following link is for a downloadable water safety pack aimed at 7 to 11-year olds
    https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/media/library/31120.pdf
There is a simple online game which are informative and fun
    https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/explorers/games/waterside-safety-challenge
  4. ROSPA. A wide variety of resources for adults and children. There is a useful water safety quiz which could be completed with adult support.

We hope that you find these resources useful!

That’s all for today’s post folks, enjoy the rest of your day, and we’re looking forward to the Scavenger Hunt tomorrow!

As always, stay safe!

Friday 5th June

Happy Friday Einstein

Hello everyone, and a happy Friday to you all!

We’ve made it to the end of another week of home learning! Give yourselves a big pat on the back for all your hard work this week.

Our first update for today is an update  letter for parents and carers from Mrs Gowans, sent out today.

Head Teacher Update Letter- Friday 5th June

We launched ‘Broughton Reads’ at the start of the week, and we’ve seen some lovely examples of pupils and staff sharing their reading for enjoyment photos. Some are reading at lunch, some at ‘Drop everything and read’ time. We’ve gathered a selection in the slideshow below. These were shared through our Twitter feed, through Teams, or through emailing our staff. Don’t forget, our Broughton Reads focus lasts until the end of term, so there’s plenty of time to share a picture with us!

Miss Bishop from LC1 has a message she’d like to share with you all-

When I was visiting out partner school, Mboreni Primary in Tanzania, I learned how to make Mendazi.  Mendazi are a bit like a doughnut, but not in that shape. The teachers used to have them every break time. I have attached the recipe so you can have a go at making some of the food they eat in Tanzania. The recipe makes a lot of mendazi, so you may want to make lots, or half the recipe. You might want to add your own toppings at the end. The recipe does include hot oil so please be careful, and enjoy your cooking!

After a successful trial with our P7s, our P6 teachers are planning to invite their pupils to ‘Group Call’ meetings through Teams next week. This will be introduced to our P5 and P4 pupils at soon too, so they can have the chance to talk to their teacher and a few classmates, at least once before we break up for summer holidays. Class teachers will send out information around this before they ‘meet’ the children, so look out for this!

Finally, have you seen this? Historic Environment Scotland have created an online resource which is a 3D virtual model of Edinburgh Castle! You can explore the world famous Scottish stronghold, and you’ll even get virtual access to parts of the castle that no visitors have been able to see for many years. Follow the link below-

That’s all for today, and this week folks! Well done again, for all your hard work. Keep sharing your fantastic learning with us, and have a great weekend!
